Is wireless internet tv about to replace cable? Intel have announced their wireless streaming technology known as ‘WiDi‘. This will allow users to watch internet content such as You Tube and iPlayer on their TV.
So what is a WiDi? This is Intel's wireless display and will remove the need for cables when watching pc
content on your TV.
The new WiDi, which was shown off by Intel at the company’s developer conference this year, is already included in new laptops. But, to make use of the wireless streaming, users will have to buy a Netgear adapter to connect to the TV.
Intel has launched WiDi at just the right time though, as viewers clamber to watch internet tv and video. Many experts in the media industry believe that wireless internet media streaming will soon replace cable and satellite as the tv content of choice for many viewers. The choice of internet tv increases daily, as does the quality and range of content, viewers are moving across to internet streaming services such as BBC iPlayer and You Tube.
Google is ready to imminently launch Google TV, a new set-top-box platform based on Google’s Android operating system that will combine cable programming with access to online content. Plus there is the minor complication of the newly revamped Apple TV.
The WiDi will use WiFi to stream content wirelessly across the home. WiFi does not require line of sight and it can reach about 9 Mbps speeds, says Stude. It is much slower than wireless HDMI that can offer speeds of up to 500 Mbps. Intel’s software will work on all laptops using Arrendale based core i3, i5 and core i7 technologies. But they will have to have Intel’s 802.11-n chips.
Unfortunately as the wireless streaming is currently to limited to 720p resolution and will not be able to stream Blu-ray movies. Stude says Intel plans to support HD video in the future.
